 Important info:

Please remember that the incidents you read about below are more "newsworthy" than our everyday type of incident.  Local 1522 takes great pride in handling many of our responses without "fanfare".  We respond to over 6,000 calls for service per year with an average response time of approx. 3 minutes.  The calls we are most proud of are the heart attacks or the "small fires" that are kept under control by responding quickly, effectively, and efficiently.

We would not be able to complete our mission without the support of the residents of the City of New London.  Thank you!

ANOTHER YOUNG MEMBER OF THE NLFD LEAVING

Updated On: Jan 25, 2012 (22:51:00)

Another newer member of the NLFD is leaving.  FF Jason Preuss, who joined the NLFD in January of 2011, is moving on to the West Hartford Fire Department.  The members of New London FF's Local 1522 would like to wish Jason the best of luck in his new department.  Once again, we find ourselves losing an asset and can't help but ask, why?  The lack of a defined benefit pension is becoming an obvious source of problems when it comes to retaining young firefighters here in New London.  New London FF's are busy, eager, and hard working, but the issue of insufficient 401's and the lack of Social Security protection is too much for most firefighters to ignore.

NLFF's WITH A BUSY START TO 2012

Posted On: Jan 25, 2012 (21:04:14)

NLFF's have started off 2012 with a busy few weeks.  Aside from the multiple building fires in December and January, members have been busy day and night, logging 438 runs as of January 25th.  There have been a number of days this month with over 20 runs in a 24 hour period.  Included in these assignments were multiple crashes, a few car fires, and various other emergencies.  NLFF's have also taken advantage of the spring like weather and conducted training activities.

GROUP 2 RESPONDS TO FIRE AT 260 CONNECTICUT AVENUE

Updated On: Jan 16, 2012 (15:32:00)

Group 2 responded to a bedroom fire at 260 Connecticut Avenue on the 1st floor.  Units arrived to find smoke coming from the front door and stretched one hoseline to extinguish the fire.  All occupants were outside of the multi-family building when units arrived on the scene.  All on-duty units responded to the incident.

GROUP 2 RESPONDS TO WORKING FIRE AT 15 HUNTINGTON STREET

Updated On: Jan 16, 2012 (08:23:00)

Group 2 responded to the second fire of the day on 1/12/11 at approx. 9:15pm.  This fire was found on the 3rd floor of what was classified as a "halfway house" by WFSB.  Upon arrival, Engine 11 found fire from a window on the 3rd floor of the large wood frame building, which is located near the intersection of Washington Street.  Members stretched a line to the fire floor and quickly knocked down the fire.  All on-duty units were needed to contain the fire and to conduct searches and ventilation.  Click here for more from WFSB.

GROUP 2 RESPONDS TO 2ND ALARM AT 48 REED STREET

Updated On: Jan 18, 2012 (14:30:00)

NLFF's responded to a 2nd alarm fire at 48 Reed Street in the early morning hours of 1/12/12.  Members of Group 2 found heavy fire on arrival, with live wires arcing and heavy winds pushing fire toward an occupied house on the south side of the fire building.  A 2nd alarm was quickly transmitted due to conditions and multiple handlines and master streams were used to contain the fire.  Occupants that were in the street stated that everyone made it out of the building.  Click here for more info from The Patch.    Click here for photos from Chris Venditti.

NEW LONDON FIREFIGHTERS 2011 ANNUAL REVIEW

Posted On: Dec 31, 2011 (08:40:53)

As 2011 wraps up, New London Firefighters find themselves finishing up a busy year. As of this posting, NLFF’s have responded to over 6,600 incidents, which is the 2nd busiest year on record (2nd to 2010 when we responded to over 500 incidents during severe spring flooding). As usual, our members continue to carry the torch when it comes to supporting our city. Thousands of dollars in scholarships were awarded to NLHS seniors this summer through the Dr. Carl Wies Scholarship Trust. More recently, hundreds of toys were collected this holiday season and were distributed to New London families in need. This effort wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of NLFF’s and members of the NL Police union. Additionally, NLFF’s played their annual softball game in the name of the McCourt Foundation and raised thousands of dollars for a great organization, the Juliana Valentine McCourt Education Fund.

Of course, our members are not immune to personal loss. NLFF’s observed the passing of former L-1522 Union President Lt. Gary Batch as well as a number of members who lost loved ones during 2011. They will never be forgotten. Lt. Batch was recognized during the bi-annual UPFFA convention this year in Waterbury, CT.

NLFF’s continue to be very active in the political arena, hosting multiple meetings with Congressman and friend Joe Courtney. Through the hard work of NLFF’s, the NLFD, and Congressman Courtney, the NLFD was awarded another Assistance to Firefighters Grant for over $122,000.00. Also, a number of candidates endorsed by our local were elected to the New London City Council, including FF Mike Passero who became the 1st New London City Council President. Additionally, our membership is eager to work with Mayor Justin Finizio and his administration. Mayor Finizio was able to witness our members at their best during a recent fire on Boulevard Court, where FF Kevin Johnson removed a female occupant from the fire building.

While on the subject of locating fire victims, Lt. Ted Sargent and FF Joe Hancock recently removed a female occupant from a 2nd Alarm fire at 21 Pacific Street. It should be noted that both of these fires and other fires during 2011 were located in the south end of the city. This is an area that received enhanced fire protection due to the efforts of Local 1522. Our union was able to secure staffing to Ladder 35 / Ambulance A-400 during the last contract cycle, which has made an undeniable difference in the delivery of fire and EMS services in the south end and the entire city. Aside from these “success stories”, NLFF’s handled a number of challenging incidents throughout the year, preserving life and property while operating in an efficient and professional manner. Members responded to over 150 incidents, ranging from trees on houses, to wires on vehicles, and significant flooding during Hurricane Irene back in August.

As we have said before, many of our “routine” incidents are handled without fanfare or publicity. These types of incidents are the kind that we are most proud of. Whether it is the heart attack that is treated early due to fast response times, the stove fire that is knocked down before it can destroy an entire building, or delivering fire safety education, NLFF’s continue to be there for New London and will continue to do so in the upcoming year. Please have a safe and happy 2012!
